This adapted brochure, available as a pdf, on the internet is a valuable quick reference guide for determining racism and sexism in children's literature. The guidelines were developed by the Council
on Interracial Books for Children in conjunction with the California State Department of Education. These tips can be used by teachers, parents, librarians, and other educators to help children identify stereotypes in the books they read. Tips include checking the illustrations for stereotyping, consider the lifestyles of the characters, and note the role of women and relationship between characters. The 10 Quick Ways to Analyze Children’s Books For Racism and Sexism is a great tool to use in our libraries when purchasing, weeding, or recommending books to children.
